The Agreement, signed in New York on 28 October 1996 under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), establishes the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) as an independent international organization dedicated to the research, development, and distribution of safe, effective, and affordable vaccines, particularly for populations in developing countries.
The agreement defines the Institute’s legal status, privileges and immunities. As provided by Article II, The Government of the Republic of Korea grants the Institute the same rights, privileges and immunities as are customarily accorded to a similar type of international organization.
Privileges and immunities are granted to the Members of the Board of Trustees, the Director and staffs of the Institute as is stipulated in Article VIII, Article IX and Article XIII of the Constitution of the Institute hereto appended and to experts performing missions for the Institute (Article II, par. 2).
